BAGHDAD – The U.S. military says an Iraqi al-Qaida in Iraq leader blamed in the 2004 abduction and murder of an Army reservist has been killed.
The military says Hajji Hammadi is linked to the killing of Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Matt Maupin and was the mastermind behind a June 26 attack that killed three U.S. Marines, two interpreters and more than 20 Iraqis in Anbar.
Maupin was a 20-year-old private first class when his fuel convoy was attacked by insurgents in Iraq in April 2004. His remains were found in March northwest of Baghdad.
Thursday's statement says Hammadi was killed with another armed insurgent on Nov. 11 in a raid by U.S. forces in Baghdad's Mansour neighborhood. Five others were detained.
